SOAC CHEERLEADING is a program that teaches the fundamentals of stunting, cheer motions, and dance in order to provide the girls with the basic cheerleading skills. As they progress, the stunting and dances become more difficult. This will give them the skills to hopefully move on to the high school level. Tumbling skills are a plus as this skill is a necessity as they go into high school.
Practices begin at the end of August usually held three nights a week until school starts and then drops to two. Times are held around 6:30-8:30pm (until it begins to get dark, then we end at 8pm – when outside). Practices in the fall are held twice a week approximately 6:30pm – 9:00pm (depending on team & space approval) and are held at either Thomas Jefferson or Benjamin Franklin Elementary Schools. Specifics will be given out as soon as the coaches receive confirmation of space. *** PLEASE NOTE: practices are not scheduled for 2 ½ hours long. Actual practices run approximately 2 hours long. Specific times will be given out by each team’s coach.
The teams cheer for the football games which begin mid-September and run until November (ending with a Turkey Bowl the eve before Thanksgiving). JV & Varsity home games are played on the LHS turf field. Games are usually Sunday mornings (but are subject to change). There are also some Saturday night games. Flag football games are played on Saturdays (girls will cheer at the 11am game) held at the Administration Building.
CHEER CAMP: We will once again hold a cheer camp assisted by the LHS Cheerleaders August 5, 6, & 7 at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School from 9:00am to 1:30pm which jump starts our season. The Lakeland High School Cheerleading team teaches the proper techniques of stunting, motions, and dance moves. They learn a dance routine and cheer routine that will be performed for the parents on the last day. Registration forms will be available at registration as well on-line.

PINK GAME: In coordination with the Lakeland football and cheerleading teams, the SOAC football and cheer teams participate in the annual “Pink Game” to raise money for Breast Cancer Research and bring awareness of the disease. Orders for pink shirts and bows will be taken at the time of registration. The SOAC Cheerleaders will perform with the Lakeland cheerleaders during the half-time of the Lakeland Football game. This is a wonderful community event and the goal is to raise $10,000 this year. ** If you wish to be a sponsor for this event, please let us know. **
CHEER COMPETITIONS: The most exciting part of being a cheerleader is competing. All teams will compete in approximately 3 competitions. We try to do as many competitions as we can in November and December; however, one or two may be in January depending on competition schedules.
